Kira's Favorite Links

As if you needed more sites to sink yourself into, right? Well, here are a few that I've wasted hours on...

Daily Destinations

  • I read Metafilter regularly. That's not to say I read every story... a lot of it is just silly, or annoying, or otherwise uninteresting. But sometimes they post some real gems that I wouldn't otherwise have seen.
  • Google has become part of my brain, I think... its certainly an indispensable part of my "netsphere"...
  • Amazon is a pretty central part of my netsphere as well... if I'm going to buy something, I usually check Amazon first.
  • Damn Interesting doesn't have new content daily, but when they do post stuff, it is pretty damn interesting.

Funny as Hell

Flash Games

  • Planet Defender
  • Amanita Design, creators of the whimsical Samorost and Samorost 2 games, plus a few others.
  • Questionaut is another beautiful flash game by the guys from Amanita Design
  • Quadradius is a 2-player game; it starts off kinda like checkers, but quickly becomes a wild ride as pieces capture orbs that give them all kinds of powers. The board often looks like a war zone by the time it's over. Fun game!
  • Bloxorz, a 3-d puzzle game
  • RSVP is a quirky 50's-deco-style card game; you have to match the colors of cards around the table.
  • Microlife - help the little micros grow up and defend their colony. Cute!
  • Acno's Energizer - addictive. I wish there were more levels (then again, maybe not...)
  • Net - connect the blocks of the circuit using wires.
  • Orisinal - A bunch of cute (but simple) flash games by Ferry Halim
  • Telescope game, made by (of all things) a vacuum-cleaner company.
  • Rusted Jacks, an incredible blackjack game by Steven Garofalo. He used to have an amazing website of dark fantasy art, but it vanished sometime in 2001-2002. He's not dead, though... he e-mailed me recently and said he should have a new site up soon. I can't wait to see it!

Other Games

  • Kingdom of Loathing - an online game with minimal graphics and wacky adventures.
  • Here is Alida, a Myst-like game.
  • Bookworm Game (java)... Josh got me hooked on this. Then he told me the evil trick (spoilers!) to beating it, and I played til I had a million points. Then I was tired, so I quit. (Apparently since then they've changed the game so that the gold blocks have a limited lifespan. ah well.)

Foodie Stuff

  • Tastespotting will make you hungry...
  • Buckskin Orchard sells the most luscious Washington cherries, apples and pears, shipped direct when the fruit is in season (which, for cherries, is a very few weeks in the summer). But oh, are they good.
  • If heaven has a grocery store, surely it must be like Central Market.
  • Alton Brown, my favorite food nerd.
  • Comfort Foods makes a fantastic Jalapeno Vegetable dip mix.
