I've been involved in the model horse hobby since around 1978. It's rather an obscure hobby, and unless you're in it you may not have ever heard of it. It's not really too different than a lot of miniatures hobbies though. We collect and customize models, have regional and national model horse shows, and there are even several magazines for the hobby (such as Horsing Around and Just About Horses.
I've been painting and customizing model horses for years, and have recently started doing original sculptures in mini (1/24 & smaller) scale.
Here are some photos of my work. (Click on the thumbnails for a larger picture.)
Original Sculptures
Flyin' Dreams, a jumping Thoroughbred. Original sculpture (2001), now available as a limited edition resin edition of 50. "Ideal", mini Oldenburg stallion, original sculpture (2001). Repaints and Customs
These are horses other people have sculpted/cast; I just painted them. A few are "customized", meaning that I repositioned/altered the original body in some way.
Zyde-Go-Go, resin by Lynn Fraley, painted by me to a soft blue roan blanket appaloosa. 2008 "Mimzy", NAN-qualified Mini Nahar (resin by Sarah Rose), painted by me to a nice chestnut tobiano pinto. 2007 Mini Caprice (resin by Karen Gerhardt), painted a rich red bay. 2006 "Prospero", Tenorio resin by Kristina Lucas, which I painted a very pearlescent dapple mulberry grey. 2001
"Worth The Wait" resin, painted for Cheri Stewart.
"Comet Dust", a Timothy resin painted for Cheri Stewart. I was going for the "silver dapple" color here, though he ended up more chocolatey than I had originally envisioned. Andalusian stallion, customized from the Morganglanz mold. A drastic remake; I completely resculpted his neck and head. Showed at NAN in 1999. I sold him in July 2001; he's the last custom model I did (and I don't plan on doing any more customs. It's just easier to sculpt from scratch.)
The Minuet resin by Kathleen moody, which I painted this dapple grey color for Carrie Sapp in 1993.
Firon, my first resin casting; about 30 produced. I painted several in bay, black, dapple grey and chestnut. Some were sold unpainted. Sarah Minkiewicz also painted four of them. 1992-93 time frame. A Swaps (?) classic sized racehorse repainted to a dark dapple rosy grey. Sold at Breyerfest some years back. (94-95 perhaps) The very first custom model I ever sold. He's the San Domingo mold, with the left hind and right forelegs straightened so he's in a standing pose. He's a rather plain bay color but I still think he turned out pretty darn good. I don't remember the year on this one - probably 1980's sometime. Other Model Horse Stuff
BreyerFest is the annual model horse convention. I have several photo albums from past years 'fests. Breyer Connoisseur Models are limited edition special runs made by Breyer.
